The Significance of Black History Month | Mini Lesson #1

Posted on May 26, 2022

This Black History Month has been full of acknowledgements, celebrations and reflections for many. Whether you attended community events, read books by Black-identifying authors, or showed extra love to Black-owned businesses – this February has been an extremely important time for all communities on these lands.

Yet, as Venecia Williams puts it: “How do we continue to share stories, to share successes of people in the Black community all year long?”

We know that this month is a significant step in the direction of celebrating Black history always, and is a catalyst for meaningful conversations year-round. As we move forward having learned lots this Black History Month, let’s continue to think how we can educate ourselves better so that we can actively combat Anti-Black racism. Intentionally seeking and reflecting on the many historical and ongoing contributions of Black Canadians is something we can practice in our communities, year-round.

A very warm thank you to speakers Venecia, Ruth and Donneil from Power of Discourse Consulting.
